Halitosis is the proper term used to refer to unpleasant or bad breath. It is also sometimes referred to as fetor oris. Halitosis is something we’ve all worried about from time to time. However, some people worry about it far more than others. Halitophobia is a constant fear of halitosis or bad breath. Simply put, it is when a person is seriously afraid they are suffering from bad breath around clock. Whether your concerns are more minor or you’re suffering from full-blown halitophobia, there are some simple tricks you can use to test whether your breather is pleasant or not.

The Spoon Test.

One of the easiest method for testing for halitosis requires nothing more than a spoon and your mouth. Take the spoon and gently scrape the bottom side along the top of your tongue. This should bring off some saliva and small particle matter with it. Give the spoon just a moment to dry and then take a whiff.

It’s safe to assume that when people smell your breath they are smelling exactly what you smell on the spoon. It’s a good sign if you smell nothing at all. Most people have some scent in their mouth so don’t feel completely disgusted if you do smell something. If the odor is bad, then it’s time to start taking some steps to stop the problem.

Don’t Have A Spoon?

If you don’t have a spoon around or you just don’t feel like washing one from the sink it can be replaced with something else. The wrist is a great alternative. It may take a few moments longer for the saliva to dry on your wrist, but once it has you can complete the process by taking a smell and judging your breath.

You shouldn’t perform this test immediately after brushing your teeth. Simply for the fact that it won’t give you real results regarding potential halitosis. Of course your breath is going to smell minty fresh shortly after brushing. Wait a few hours and then test to see if there is a lasting problem.

A very similar test can also be performed with just the tip of your finger. Instead of wiping it against your tongue you should reach far back into the mouth and rub against the top of the mouth itself. Be careful you don’t reach so far back that it makes you gag. You can also use a cotton swab if you don’t want to use your fingers.

What Are The Causes?

If you find that your breath is unpleasant, then you’ll want to start taking steps to prevent this. In order to do this you need to first understand what actually causes bad breath. Yes, the foods you eat and drinks you drink all play a role in how your breath smells. As does your oral hygiene, such as how often you brush, floss, and use mouth wash.

Saliva is also a key part of the process. Saliva is constantly washing the mouth and carrying away many of the particles that lead to bad breath. If you suffer from an unusually dry mouth, then you’ll probably suffer from halitosis as well. Prevent this by staying hydrated with water on a daily basis.
